Jagananna Vidya Deevena: Breaking Barriers to Higher Education in Andhra Pradesh

In a country where dreams often get derailed by financial constraints, Andhra Pradesh has made bold strides toward making higher education truly accessible. Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the state launched the Jagananna Vidya Deevena scheme—a full fee reimbursement program that is transforming the lives of lakhs of students.

For many, this isn’t just a scholarship. It’s the difference between dropping out and graduating, between being a daily-wage laborer and becoming an engineer, doctor, or teacher.

What is Jagananna Vidya Deevena?

Launched in 2019Jagananna Vidya Deevena provides 100% tuition fee reimbursement to students from economically weaker sections pursuing higher education in:

  • Engineering
  • Medicine
  • Polytechnic
  • Degree & Postgraduate Courses
  • ITI and other technical diplomas

The entire fee amount is credited directly to the mother’s bank account in four installments annually. This unique model not only encourages transparency but also makes the mother an active stakeholder in her child’s academic journey.

Eligibility at a Glance

  • Family income must be less than ₹2.5 lakh/year
  • Families must not own more than 10 acres of dry or wet land
  • Beneficiaries must not own a four-wheeler
  • Government and private college students (recognized institutions) are eligible
  • Students must maintain 75% attendance to continue receiving the benefit

The Impact: Numbers That Speak Volumes

As of 2023, the scheme has:

  • Benefited over 22 lakh students
  • Disbursed ₹10,000+ crore in fee reimbursements
  • Significantly improved college enrollment rates in rural and marginalized communities
  • Reduced the dropout rate in technical and professional courses

It has also relieved parents from the burden of educational loans and empowered young girls who are now encouraged to complete higher studies rather than being pushed into early marriage.

Changing Lives: One Student at a Time

“I was about to discontinue my BTech due to unpaid fees. Jagananna Vidya Deevena helped my mother clear all dues. I now work as a software engineer in Hyderabad,” says Dinesh, a student from Srikakulam.

“My daughter is the first girl in our family to go to college. We couldn’t have afforded it without this scheme,” shares Fatima, a vegetable vendor in Anantapur.

These stories are a testament to how policy meets purpose when driven by the right intent.

Beyond Reimbursement: A Holistic Educational Push

This scheme is part of a larger educational mission in Andhra Pradesh:

  • Jagananna Vasathi Deevena – Provides hostel and food expenses (₹10,000–₹20,000 per year).
  • Nadu-Nedu – Upgrades infrastructure in public schools and colleges.
  • Free tablets, uniforms, and books to school children.
  • English medium education in government institutions.

Together, these reforms form a pipeline of support from school to college, ensuring that no child is left behind.
