YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Bima scheme provides free accident insurance to lakhs of working-class families in Andhra Pradesh.

YSR Bima: A Safety Net for Families When the Unthinkable Happens

For daily wage workers, farmers, and informal sector employees, an accident can mean more than physical injury — it can mean the sudden, total loss of household income with no safety net to fall back on. Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s government addressed this vulnerability through YSR Bima.

What is YSR Bima?

YSR Bima is a free accident insurance scheme that automatically covers eligible white ration card holders across Andhra Pradesh, providing financial compensation to families in the event of accidental death, permanent disability, or partial disability of a working family member. The scheme requires no premium payment from beneficiaries and no separate enrollment process — coverage is extended automatically based on ration card eligibility, with compensation amounts varying based on the nature and severity of the incident.

This automatic coverage model removes a critical barrier that had limited insurance uptake among poor families in the past: the need to actively apply, pay a premium, and maintain ongoing policy compliance.

The Vision Behind the Scheme

Accident insurance has traditionally been treated as a product families had to seek out and pay for a luxury many below the poverty line simply could not prioritise, even though they were statistically among the most exposed to occupational and travel-related accident risk, whether through agricultural work, construction labour, or daily commuting on unsafe roads.

Jagan Mohan Reddy’s government inverted this model entirely — rather than waiting for vulnerable families to seek out and pay for coverage, the state extended automatic protection to all eligible ration card holders, recognising that the families least likely to actively purchase insurance were often the ones most in need of it.

The Impact So Far

YSR Bima has provided a safety net to millions of families across Andhra Pradesh:

  • Over 1.4 crore white ration card holder families automatically covered under the scheme.
  • Zero premium requirement for beneficiaries, with the state bearing the entire insurance cost.
  • Compensation provided for accidental death, full disability, and partial disability cases.
  • Claims processed through a streamlined verification system involving village and ward secretariats.
  • Significant number of families receiving compensation that would have been entirely unavailable to them under previous arrangements.

For families with no prior exposure to formal insurance products, this automatic coverage has provided protection many did not even know they were entitled to until they needed it.

More Than Just Insurance Coverage

The scheme’s broader effects have touched household financial resilience in moments of crisis:

  • Provided immediate financial relief to families facing the sudden loss of a primary earner, helping cover both emergency and ongoing expenses.
  • Reduced the likelihood of families falling into deep debt following an accidental death or disability in the household.
  • Strengthened the role of village and ward secretariats in facilitating fast, accessible claims processing for grieving or affected families.
  • Built broader public awareness of accident insurance as a concept, even among families who had never previously considered formal insurance products.
